How to Add an Announcement Channel to Discord

Discord announcement channels are how server admins and mods inform members of new events and other happenings, but they weren’t always a feature. Discord implemented official announcement channels in late 2020, as most servers initially used locked text channels for this purpose. Now, any Discord user can follow these channels to get updates.

How to Add an Announcement Channel to Discord

If you own a server or two and wish to implement an announcement channel, look no further. You’ll learn all you need to know about its features and advantages. Read on to find out more.

How to Add Announcement Channels in Discord on a PC

Announcement channels are unique in that people can follow them and receive updates on their servers. When they select the follow button inside the channel, any updates are also displayed in a designated location owned by the user. The place is another channel where these updates appear in real-time.

However, announcement channels are only available to servers that have the “Community Server” option enabled. Community servers are user-friendly and even get updates from Discord with new moderation features and more. But before a standard server can become a community server, it has several requirements to fulfill:

  • Verification Level Settings

All server members must have a verified email address before they can send messages within the server or private-messaging server members. However, users with assigned roles are exempt from this requirement.

  • Explicit Media Content Filter

This setting will scan every member’s media content as it gets uploaded. It will delete any explicit content unless you mark specific channels as NSFW (Not Safe For Work).

  • A channel with rules and guidelines clearly posted

This rule is self-explanatory, and all members must be able to read the rules at any time. Make sure you clearly state what’s allowed and what’s not.

  • A community update or moderator’s channel

A channel where Discord sends announcements that server admins and mods will find helpful is necessary. These can include new moderation features, as explained above.

You can read the Discord Community Guidelines by opening the link above. Discord will check your server’s contents before giving it the go-ahead to become a community server.

Once you fulfill everything above, you’ll be able to set up an announcement channel on your server.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Launch Discord on your PC (either the client or the web-based version).

  2. Click on the community server you want to edit.

  3. On the left, look at the channel bar and click on the “+” button.

  4. Check the “Announcement Channel” option from the list.

  5. Give it a name that reflects the server theme or something simple.

  6. Click on “Create Channel” and bring it into existence.

  7. You can start posting announcements there, and other users can follow the channel.

If you already have a channel from the past that serves as a makeshift announcements channel, you can also convert it.

  1. From your PC, open Discord.

  2. Navigate to the server you wish to modify.

  3. From the channel bar, use your cursor to highlight the channel you want to change.

  4. Click on the gear icon that appears at the right.

  5. Toggle the “Announcement Channel” option to convert it.

  6. Start making announcements.

With the help of announcement channels, server members can stay updated even if they’re not very active on your server. They’ll have to follow it first, but that’s not a complex process either; it only takes a few clicks.

Announcement Channel Details

Here are some details about announcement channels you should know about:

  • Pings don’t carry over.

Mentions such as @everyone, @here, and more won’t get pushed if you follow an announcement channel. There’s no need to worry about extra pings.

  • Messages are identical.

The updates you get from following announcement channels are identical to the source down to media, spoiler tags, and more.

  • You’ll know when the original announcement is edited.

When an admin decides to revise the message, the message you get on your server is also edited to reflect all changes.

  • The message won’t be deleted if the original vanishes.

While you still get to view the update, you’ll also get a notice below that says, “Original Message Deleted.”

  • You can publish 10 updates per hour.

If you cross this limit, you’ll be rate limited. Make sure not to annoy your server members.

How to Add Announcement Channels in Discord on an iPhone

If you own, admin, or moderate a community server, you can also add announcement channels to the server from an iPhone. The process is similar to PC, as Discord’s user interface across platforms doesn’t change too much.

Just like on a PC, your server must first pass Discord’s standards and checks before it becomes a fully-fledged community server. That’s when the many features such as announcement channels become available.

Read on for the instructions for iPhone:

  1. Open your iPhone’s Discord app.

  2. Head to any of your community servers.

  3. Swipe to the left or tap on the triple horizontal bars on the left.

  4. Tap on the “+” icon.

  5. Name your channel.

  6. Tap on the “Announcement Channel” option.

  7. When done, tap on the checkmark at the top-right corner.

  8. Your announcement channel is now ready.

Anyone with moderation powers can also convert an existing channel into an announcement channel on an iPhone through these steps:

  1. On your iPhone, open the Discord app.

  2. Navigate to a community server you moderate.

  3. Hit the three horizontal bars to the left or swipe left.

  4. Tap on the channel you want to edit.

  5. Select “Settings.”

  6. Check the box in the menu that pops up saying, “Announcement Channel.”

  7. Now, you can start making announcements.

There’s no need to go back to the PC to make these adjustments, as Discord is entirely mobile-friendly, even for moderation.

How to Add Announcement Channels in Discord on an Android Device

If you’re used to using Discord for iPhone, making the switch to an Android device isn’t challenging. You can find the same controls on Discord for Android too. This similarity also includes adding announcement channels, among other functions.

Follow these steps if you’re an Android user:

  1. Open the Discord app on your Android device.

  2. Tap on any of your community servers.

  3. Swipe left or press the hamburger icon (three bars) at the left side.

  4. Tap the “+” icon that appears.

  5. Name your new announcement channel.

  6. Select “Announcement Channel.”

  7. Tap on the checkmark in the top-right corner when you’re finished with the settings.

  8. Start making your announcements.

If you wish to repurpose an existing channel, here are the instructions:

  1. Launch Discord for Android.

  2. Scroll until you find your server and select it.

  3. Press the hamburger icon (triple bars) on the left or swipe to the left.

  4. Select the channel you want to make into an announcement channel.

  5. Choose “Settings” from the list.

  6. Tap the “Announcement Channel” box to check it.

  7. Your channel is ready for announcements.

How to Add Announcement Channels in Discord on an iPad

iPads are basically large iPhones, which means that Discord works the same way on both devices. You benefit from a larger screen and even the option to use a stylus or mouse and keyboard on iPads. However, we’ll focus on the touch screen controls instead.

The process for iPad goes like this:

  1. Open the Discord client on your iPad.

  2. Tap on any of the community servers you manage.

  3. Swipe from right to left or tap the triple horizontal bars (hamburger) on the left.

  4. When the “+” icon appears, tap it.

  5. Name the announcement channel something appropriate.

  6. At the bottom, select “Announcement Channel.”

  7. Tap on the checkmark at the top-right corner when ready.

  8. You can now make announcements, and other users can follow the channel.

As for converting a normal channel into an announcement channel, adhere to the following instructions:

  1. Open your iPad’s Discord app.

  2. Scroll down until you find your server and select it.

  3. Press the hamburger (triple horizontal bars) on the left or swipe left.

  4. Select the channel you’d like to be an announcement channel.

  5. Pick “Settings” from the list.

  6. In the next menu, check the box for “Announcement Channel.”

  7. Begin making announcements in the channel.

Listen Up, Everyone

Allowing server members to see all announcements in one channel is quite convenient. While the steps to becoming a community server are pretty complex, these servers enjoy some unique perks. Transitioning to a community server is worth the effort if you’re trying to grow and stay organized.
