Sending a text message but not getting a response is like having a one-way conversation. If you send someone a personal text and don’t get an answer, it can result in an unfortunate misunderstanding, a missed business deal, or the failure to get response to an important question.

Phone Not Receiving Text Messages - How To Fix

But rather than human error, the problem could be with your phone. There could be several reasons why your smartphone may have stopped receiving texts. But the good news is there are also several things you can do to fix the problem yourself. Keep reading this article to discover ways you can solve the problem before a technical inconvenience turns into a disaster.

iPhone Not Receiving Text Messages

Technology lets us send messages anywhere in the world in just a couple of seconds. Globally, between 5 and 6 billion texts are sent each day. In the United States alone, 81% of Americans use texting to communicate for personal, social, and business purposes.

Thus, you probably use your iPhone’s messaging app as often as you make actual calls – if not more. This means you might know the three key components needed to send a text message are your device, the app, and the network. Problems that can occur with one or more of these components include:

  • The device not working properly

  • The network not receiving or sending messages

  • The messaging app malfunctioning

If any of these occur, you might not get that message you’re expecting. If you’re not getting texts, try one of these suggestions:

Contact Apple support if your iPhone still does not receive messages. Apple provides comprehensive troubleshooting and support online and by phone. You can also download the Apple Support app for more help.

Not Receiving Texts From Anyone

Does your device fail to receive messages from anyone at all, regardless of the type of device they are using? Many iPhone users have resolved this problem with one of these fixes:

Reset your network. iPhones are equipped with a Reset Network Settings option built into the device. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the “Settings” app.

  2. Go to “General” and tap “Reset.”

  3. Tap the “Reset Network Settings” option.

Check to see if your carrier settings are updated. Local carriers release updates on a regular basis. Follow the steps below to remedy any interference with incoming texts to your iPhone.

  1. Open the “Settings” app.

  2. Go to “General” and access the “About” menu.

  3. Scroll down to “Personal” and you will find the network name and current version of the provider network.

  4. Tap “Network Provider.” Your iPhone will update to the latest available version.

Turn Airplane Mode off and on again. This is a common fix for issues that are network-related. Here’s how:

  1. Pull down the Control Center from the upper right corner of the home screen.

  2. Turn on Airplane Mode. Wait for a few seconds and disable it.

  3. Have someone send you a text to see if this fix worked.

Disable and enable iMessage. This fix is similar to turning Airplane Mode off and on again.

  1. Open the “Settings” option.

  2. Go to “Messages” then use the iMessage toggle to disable messages.

  3. Wait a few seconds and enable iMessage.

  4. Test this fix by having someone send you a text.

Hopefully one of these solutions will save you a trip to the Apple Store to have your device repaired or replaced.

Not Receiving Texts From One Person

If you are not receiving text messages from one particular person, try these suggestions.

  • Check to see if you are in an area with a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection.

  • Turn off iMessage and restart your device.

  • View where you are able to receive and reply to messages. Go to Settings > Messages > Send and Receive.

  • Find out if you are sharing the same Apple ID with another device, which can block your messages. To fix this problem do the following:

    1. Completely clear the phone that is sharing your Apple ID.

    2. Set up the other device as a “new” iPhone following the steps in Apple Support.

    3. Delete the contact. Make sure the entire message thread from that contact is deleted. Add the contact again.

Sometimes it is easy to resolve an issue with your iPhone if you take advantage of the online support provided by Apple. You can search for possible solutions by browsing the questions and answers in the Apple Support community. Other iPhone users are likely having the same problem. You will find several possible solutions, including one that may fix your issue.

Android Phone Not Receiving Text Messages

If you’re using an Android device and you’re not receiving text messages from other people using various devices, you can try one of these fixes.

Not Receiving Texts From One Person

Your Android phone may receive messages just fine from everyone except one person. If you find you’re not getting messages from a specific contact, try the following:

  1. Confirm that you did not block them by mistake.

  2. Delete the contact and add it back in again.

  3. Check if you need to specify a country code for their number (For instance, +1 is the code for U.S. numbers).

  4. Ask the sender to make sure the message was successfully sent on their end.

You should also go to the website of your cellular provider to see if they are having network-wide issues. Some problems with the network are not obvious to the user but could exist and affect certain functions. You can view any alerts and updates regarding the network on their website.

Technical Difficulties or Failure to Communicate

Successful communication is a two-way street. A reply to an email can make or break a deal or relationship. You may be unaware that you are not receiving texts until someone asks why you are not responding. Fortunately, there is help and support readily available to help you fix the problem and make amends quickly.
