How to Block a Group Text on an Android Device

These days, almost everyone who owns an Android device is part of at least one group chat. It could be family, friends, or colleagues at work. Group texts are great because you’re able to keep up with everyone without having to make one-on-one calls or send direct messages.

But let’s face it. No one wants to receive a barrage of messages every other minute. It can be annoying and disruptive. You could end up picking up your phone tens or hundreds of times a day, a situation that could make you less focused and less productive.

In this article, we’ll show you how to block a group chat on Android.

How to Block A Specific Group Text on an Android Phone

There’s always that person who constantly texts in every group chat, even when they don’t have anything relevant or urgent to share.

They might send a ton of messages – all within a few hours – just to catch everyone’s attention. It can be disruptive, especially when you’re trying to concentrate on a task while still keeping an ear out for important texts or calls.

In addition, some group texts may have been written in vulgar/offensive language.

If you find yourself in any of these situations, you can block the sender individually. This means you won’t receive any message they send, but you’ll continue receiving messages from everyone else in the group.

Here’s how to go about it:

  1. Open the messaging app.

  2. Navigate to the group chat.

  3. Tap on the ellipsis (three vertical dots) in the upper right corner to open the group text’s settings page.

  4. Select “People & Options.” At this point, you should see a list of all the group text members.

  5. To block a given member, tap on their name and select “block.’

  6. Tap on “Block” in the pop-up screen to confirm.

How to Block All Group Texts on an Android Phone

If you don’t want any message sent in the group chat to be delivered to your device, you can block all users in one fell swoop. To do so, you need to install the Textra SMS app on your Android and use it as your default messaging app.

Here’s how that works:

  1. Open the Google App Store on your device or click here.

  2. Download and install the Textra SMS app.

  3. After installation, the app will request you to choose your default messaging app. Ensure you select “Textra SMS” from the pop-up window. Once the app is set as your default app, it will automatically sync your messages.

  4. Open the group text and tap on the down arrow in the top right corner of your screen.

  5. Tap on the three small dots in the top right corner and select “Blocklist” from the pop-up submenu to block all incoming messages in the group text.

How to Block Group Text Spam on an Android

Text spam is a huge problem when you are using your Android phone. Many people find it to be such an annoyance that they want to block group text messages altogether.

Group text spam can take several forms. For example, it could be someone marketing a product you don’t need or sharing a series of links that could be potentially infected with viruses and malware. You don’t want these types of messages filling up space in between friends’ conversations.

While you can’t completely get rid of text spam without changing your number, there are some steps you can take to block these unwanted messages, so they don’t interrupt your life.

Here are the steps:

  1. Open the messaging app.

  2. Navigate to the group text of interest.

  3. Tap and hold a spam message and note the sender’s phone number.

  4.  Tap on the three vertical dots in the upper right corner to open the group text’s settings page.

  5. Select “People & Options.”

  6. Scroll through the list to find the number you identified moments earlier. Once you’ve found it, give it a tap and hold, and then select “block.’

  7. Tap on “Block” in the pop-up screen to confirm.

In some Android models, the block button is available when you tap on the spam message sent.

Don’t Let Texts Ruin Your Day

There are many ways to block group texts, but you need to be careful about how you do it because you can end up losing valuable data in the process.

It’s important to remember that there’s always the option to turn off notifications for the entire group to not interrupt your life. You can then open the conversation and catch up later on when you’re less busy.

But if you don’t want to be part of the conversation anymore, you can block the group chat altogether. That way, no one in the chat will be able to contact you again unless they call or text directly.

What’s your experience with group texts on Android? Do they get in the way of other important stuff in your life?
