  • The healthcare and government sector were less affected by the threats thanks to vigilance by law enforcement.

  • Retailers and tech companies have been adversely affected by malware and ransomware.

  • Encrypted channels are to blame for the security issues and breaches, they cause the blind spot.

According to research, the is a likelihood that there will be an increase in ransomware attacks over the holidays on e-commerce platforms.

Based on the State of Encrypted Attacks Report released by Zscaler, there has been an increase in the number of HTTPS threats since January. Retailers and tech companies have been adversely affected by this breach of security.

It is from this premise that remote workers are encouraged to have a virtual private network, this guarantees your security.

HTTPS threats

The report highlights that the HTTPS threats have increased by more than 314%, whereas, the attacks on tech companies increased by 2,300%. Retail companies on the other hand saw an 800% increase.

Most of the attacks were from the tech industry, according to the report 50% is accredited to them. Malware went up 212%, whereas, phishing increased by 90%.

The report also highlights over 20 billion threats that were detected and blocked over HTTPS. During the period of January and September, over 190 billion transitions are made on a daily basis via the Zero Trust Exchange.

It is quite evident that most IT and security teams face challenges implementing SSL/TLS inspection policies. They lack computing resources and privacy concerns

Encrypted channels are responsible for the blind spot in security features. The best way to prevent encrypted attacks is through cloud-based proxy architecture that will assist in inspecting all encrypted traffic. It is an effective zero trust security strategy.

Increased attacks over the holidays

Retailers are likely to face these attacks during the holiday. Retailers tend to provide digital purchase options to their clients over the holidays with the aim of promoting and enhancing their e-commerce solutions.

The attacks are likely to be rampant during the Black Friday and Christmas season, the malware and ransomware wave is at an all-time high during this time,

Everything is slowly getting back to normal post the pandemic. Employees are still in unstable and insecure environments, therefore, attacks are steered to point-of-sale systems. This is because of the huge profit margins.

There was a significant drop in terms of attacks on health and government organizations. The rest of the industries faced an increase in attacks from TSL and SSL traffic. The decrease in these threats could be a result of increased vigilance by law enforcement.
