Xiaomi’s MIUI phones are quite popular since they’re based on the most widespread operating system for smartphones and tablets. Moreover, they come with plenty of exciting features that make the typical Android experience even better.

How to Change Default Browser on an MIUI

Not surprisingly, the MIUI user interface allows you to use different browsers to surf the internet.

If you’re not happy with the default browser you have on your MIUI phone, here’s which ones it’s compatible with and how you can switch to the one you want instead.

Changing the Default Browser

As there are several MIUI versions, there’ll be different ways to change the default browser, depending on the version your phone is running.

MIUI 8 and Earlier Editions

Do you have a MIUI 8 or an older version? Follow the steps below to set Chrome as your default browser.

  1. Open Settings and choose Installed apps.

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the screen. There, you’ll see a gear icon labeled Default.

  3. Tap to open it and then choose Browsers.

  4. Select Google Chrome to set it as your default.

Suppose you don’t want to use Chrome. In that case, you can also select Firefox or any other available browser and make it your default.

MIUI 9

MIUI 9 users should follow the instructions below to change their default browser.

  1. Open the Settings app on your smartphone.

  2. Choose Apps, and on the next screen, select Manage Apps.

If you’re an MIUI 10 user and want to set Chrome as your default browser, here’s what to do. The steps are very similar to the MIUI 9.

  1. Open the Security app on your phone.

  2. Select the Manage apps option.

  3. On the top right corner of the screen, tap on the three dots to see more options.

  4. Select Default apps.

  5. Choose Browsers, and from this menu, select Chrome to set it as default.

Below Chrome, you will also see other available browsers. For instance, Mi Browser, which is the native MIUI one. The MIUI interface is also compatible with Safari and Opera browsers.

They’re currently testing the latest MIUI 12 in China. It’s said that this version will come with several useful updates when it comes to the Mi Browser, but you’ll still be able to set another one as your default.

How to Clear Defaults on MIUI

There’s another way to set a different default browser. You can also use these steps for other apps. For instance, you may want to open your music or images with an app that is different from the one you already have on your smartphone.

Simply follow these instructions, and you’ll get it done in a minute. This may depend on which version of MIUI your phone is running, but more or less, it comes down to the following:

  1. Open the Security app.

  2. Tap on Manage apps and tap on Browser.

  3. At the bottom of the new screen, you’ll see the Clear defaults option.

  4. Tap it to remove all the default app settings.

Now, go back to the Manage apps screen and set the desired app as your default.

Is Mi Browser Any Good?

Many users suggest you should give the Mi Browser a chance.

You may find it challenging to get used to this browser after so many years of using Chrome or other popular browsers. Still, the user experience it offers is excellent. Allegedly, the navigation is better than in Chrome, and the page load speed is just as good.

However, there might be some privacy concerns related to this browser. The same goes for the Mint browser, which also comes preinstalled on Xiaomi phones. Take this into account when deciding which browser you plan to use.

Mi Browser, Chrome, or Something Else?

It all depends on your preferences. It might take a while to become accustomed to a new browser, but you may find it more suitable for your needs when you do.

Mi Browser offers excellent navigation and a great reading experience. However, privacy issues may be a deal-breaker for you. The well-known Chrome or Firefox browsers may feel like a better choice while you’re waiting for the updated version of MIUI, which may bring a safer browsing experience.
